The Moon Phase Guide: How to Work with the Lunar Cycle

The moon has guided human ritual, agriculture, and spiritual practice for millennia. Working with the lunar cycle is one of the simplest and most grounding practices you can adopt — it gives your month a natural rhythm, a series of gentle check-ins with yourself. Here at Monday's Moon, our entire candle range is inspired by the moon, so we thought it was time to share how we actually work with her.

New Moon — Set Your Intentions

The New Moon is a time of beginnings. The sky is dark, the slate is clean, and it's the perfect moment to get clear on what you want to call in over the coming month. This is a time for journalling, quiet reflection, and planting seeds — not for forcing action.

Ritual idea: Light our New Moon Candle, write down three intentions for the lunar month ahead, and hold a piece of Labradorite (for intuition and new beginnings) as you set them.

Waxing Moon — Take Action

As the moon grows from New to Full, her energy builds. This is the time to take steps toward your intentions — to make the calls, start the projects, and lean into growth. The waxing phase is expansive and energising.

Ritual idea: Keep a piece of Carnelian on your desk during this phase to support motivation and momentum. Light a candle from our Moon Phase collection each evening as a ritual anchor.

Full Moon — Celebrate & Release

The Full Moon is the peak of the lunar cycle — a time of heightened energy, illumination, and release. Whatever has been building comes to a head. It's a powerful time to celebrate how far you've come, and to let go of anything that no longer serves you.

Ritual idea: Light our Full Moon Candle and write down what you're ready to release. Place your crystals outside or on a windowsill overnight to cleanse and charge them in the moonlight. Our Selenite Moon Bowl is perfect for this.

Waning Moon — Rest & Reflect

As the moon moves back toward dark, her energy turns inward. This is a time for rest, integration, and gentle reflection. Don't push — let things settle. Clear out what's no longer needed, both physically and energetically.

Ritual idea: Hold a Amethyst Worry Stone during a quiet evening meditation. Light a calming candle, dim the lights, and simply breathe.

Our Named Moon Candles

Each full moon of the year has a traditional name, rooted in Indigenous and folk traditions. We've created a candle for each one — from the Snow Moon of February to the Buck Moon of July, the Flower Moon of May to the Frost Moon of November. Each is hand-poured in small batches using natural soy wax, and the fragrance is chosen to evoke the season and spirit of that particular moon.

Start Your Lunar Practice

You don't need to overhaul your life to work with the moon. Start small: light a candle on the New Moon, write one intention, and notice how the month unfolds. Over time, you'll find your own rhythm — and the moon will feel less like a distant celestial body and more like a familiar, reliable companion.
